Gender Equality in the 2SLGBTQI+ Community Series: Blog 11 - Understanding Gender Pronouns

What Are Gender Pronouns?

Gender pronouns are words used to refer to people without using their names. Common pronouns include he/him, she/her, and they/them, but many other pronouns exist to respect diverse gender identities. Understanding and using correct gender pronouns is a fundamental aspect of respecting and acknowledging an individual's gender identity.

The Role of Pronouns in Identity

Pronouns are deeply connected to a person’s sense of self and identity. Using the correct pronouns affirms an individual’s gender identity and helps them feel seen and respected. Conversely, using incorrect pronouns can be hurtful and invalidating, impacting a person's mental and emotional well-being.

Common Pronouns

  • He/Him/His: Typically used by those who identify as male.
  • She/Her/Hers: Typically used by those who identify as female.
  • They/Them/Theirs: Used by individuals who identify as non-binary, genderqueer, or prefer a gender-neutral pronoun.
  • Other Pronouns: Some people may use less common pronouns such as ze/hir, xe/xem, or fae/faer. It is important to ask and respect these pronouns as well.

In our next blog, we will explore the importance of using correct gender pronouns and how it impacts the 2SLGBTQI+ community.
