By donating securities, you can maximize your contribution to Durham Alliance Outreach while enjoying significant tax benefits. Here’s how you can make a difference through this powerful giving option.

The Benefits of Donating Securities

1. Avoid Capital Gains Taxes: When you donate securities directly, capital gains taxes don’t apply. This means that our charity receives the full fair market value of the securities when they are sold, allowing your donation to go further.

2. Receive a Larger Tax Receipt: You will receive a charitable tax receipt that reflects the full market value of your donated securities. This often results in a larger tax deduction compared to selling the securities first and then donating the proceeds.

3. Give More, Get More: By leveraging the tax benefits of donating securities, you can afford to give more while receiving more in return, creating a win-win situation for both you and Durham Alliance Outreach.

How It Works

We have partnered with CanadaHelps, a trusted organization that processes security donations on our behalf. Here’s a step-by-step guide to donating your securities:

1. Complete the Online Pledge:

• Visit our Securities Donation Page and complete the online pledge form.
• Provide details about your securities or mutual funds donation.
• Once complete, download the Letter of Direction form. You will also receive an email confirming your pledge.

2. Authorize the Transfer:

• Send the completed Letter of Direction to your broker, authorizing the transfer of your shares to CanadaHelps.
• It typically takes 1 to 2 working days for the transfer to settle within the CanadaHelps account.

3. CanadaHelps Processes Your Donation:

• CanadaHelps will promptly sell the shares upon receipt.
• Once proceeds are received, CanadaHelps will send you a detailed confirmation email with your charitable tax receipt and disburse the proceeds from the sale to Durham Alliance Outreach.

4. Direct Investing Platforms:

• If you use a Direct Investing platform such as RBC Direct Invest, TD Waterhouse Direct Investing, Scotia iTrade, or QuestTrade, you may need to complete the Letter of Authorization/Direction Form available from your Direct Investing firm.
• The Letter of Direction we provide at the end of your pledge includes all the information you will need to complete their form.

Note: A new Letter of Direction (LOD) and pledge form must be used for each securities donation to avoid delays. Please do not reuse previous LODs.
