Calming Kits Series: Blog 4 - Creating Calming Kits for Youth
The Importance of Calming Kits for Youth
Children can experience stress and anxiety just like adults, and it's crucial to provide them with tools to manage these emotions. Calming Kits for youths are specially designed to help young ones find comfort and relaxation. These kits can be used at home, in school, or on the go to provide immediate relief from stressors.
Essential Items for Youths' Calming Kits
1. Soft Toys: Stuffed animals or plush toys provide comfort and a sense of security. They are great for youth to hold and cuddle when they feel anxious.
2. Coloring Books and Crayons: Art can be a wonderful outlet for youth to express their emotions. Colouring books and crayons offer a creative way for youth to calm down and focus.
3. Sensory Items: Items like stress balls, play dough, or textured toys can help youths with sensory processing and provide a tactile distraction from stress.
4. Visual Aids: Glitter jars or calming bottles can captivate younger ones' attention and help them relax by watching the gentle movements.
5. Storybooks: Books with calming stories or guided imagery can help youth unwind and take their minds off their worries.
6. Music and Sounds: A small sound machine or recordings of soothing music and nature sounds can create a calming environment for younger folks.
7. Breathing Cards: Simple cards with breathing exercises can teach youth how to manage their breath and reduce anxiety.
Tips for Using Calming Kits with Children
1. Introduce the Kit During Calm Moments: Show children how to use the items in their Calming Kit when they are already calm. This way, they will know how to use the tools when they need them.
2. Make It Accessible: Keep the Calming Kit in a place where youth can easily reach it whenever they feel stressed or anxious.
3. Encourage Regular Use: Encourage youths to use their Calming Kit regularly, not just during high-stress moments. This practice can help them develop healthy coping habits.
4. Customize the Kit: Let youth help choose the items for their Calming Kit. This involvement can make them more likely to use the kit and feel a sense of ownership over it.
5. Use Positive Reinforcement: Praise youth for using their Calming Kit and managing their emotions. Positive reinforcement can encourage them to continue using the kit.
