Education is one of the ways Durham Alliance Outreach helps build safer, more informed, and more inclusive communities across Durham Region.

DAO’s education and workshop programming is designed for individuals, community groups, workplaces, and organizations that want to strengthen their understanding of 2SLGBTQIA+ identities, inclusion, allyship, and safer-space practices.

What DAO Education Can Cover

Programming may include topics such as:

  • 2SLGBTQIA+ foundations: terminology, identities, lived experiences, and common barriers.
  • Trans inclusion: understanding gender identity, respectful language, pronouns, and creating safer environments for trans and gender-diverse people.
  • Allyship: practical ways to move from passive acceptance toward meaningful support and advocacy.
  • Inclusive workplaces: helping employers and teams strengthen policies, culture, communication, and day-to-day inclusion.
  • Community education: workshops and resources responding to emerging community needs.

Why This Work Matters

Inclusive communities are built through more than good intentions. Education can help people recognize barriers, challenge misinformation, communicate more respectfully, and create environments where 2SLGBTQIA+ people are treated with dignity.

For businesses and organizations, this work can also help strengthen workplace culture, improve service delivery, and give staff practical tools for responding respectfully to diverse community members.

Learning Should Be Practical

DAO’s approach focuses on making education useful in real situations. That means moving beyond definitions and exploring how inclusion shows up in conversations, policies, public-facing services, workplaces, volunteer environments, and community spaces.

Depending on the program, sessions may include discussion, examples, scenarios, and opportunities to ask questions in a respectful learning environment.

Education Is Part of a Larger Support System

Education is one part of DAO’s broader work across Durham Region. Our programs also include food support through the DAO Market, peer connection and support, Pride Durham, Club 717, practical community supports, and other initiatives designed to strengthen connection and well-being.
