One of the easiest ways to normalize the use of gender pronouns is to include them when introducing yourself. For example, you can say, "Hi, my name is Alex, and my pronouns are they/them." This practice encourages others to share their pronouns and fosters an environment of respect.
Include pronouns in your email signatures, social media profiles, and name tags. For example:
When meeting someone new, it’s respectful to ask for their pronouns. You can simply say, "What pronouns do you use?" This shows that you are considerate of their identity and willing to respect it.
If you or someone else uses the wrong pronouns, gently correct the mistake and continue the conversation. For example, "Actually, Jordan uses he/him pronouns," and then proceed without making it a bigger issue than necessary.
In our next blog, we will explore how to implement gender pronoun practices in organizational settings such as workplaces, schools, and community groups.
